I just got back from the SES Chicago 2011 conference. If you haven’t heard about SES, it is an international conference in which the masterminds of SEO come together to teach classes, have open table discussions, and go over the things that are trending in the industry. Now that it has been a day or two since I have returned from this conference, I wanted to share with you a few things that stuck out to me, and that I took away from the conference in order to help you with your SEO efforts.

First, the conference really made it clear to me that SEO is something that is a part of every major industry. There were some big players that attended the conference such as Fortune 500, and Fortune 10 companies that are looking for a way to get that competitive edge in the SEO and SEM markets. From the few classes that we attended, it was clear that being able to accurately monitor the conversion rates, as well as what people are doing on your site is of upmost importance. In fact, most of the sponsors that visited the trade show were selling software of different kinds to make the tracking and reporting of data simple and easy. I was expecting to see a lot of SEO companies offering their services, but instead saw that tools were the main focus of what sponsers were selling. It is important to note that most of the sponsors were selling tools that worked on a large corporate model, but for the smaller internet marketers like myself, it was still interesting to see some of the tools that have been created.

Second, the conference was mostly made up of people that are actually working in the industry that gave the presentations in the meetings and sessions. This was refreshing to see the success that people are having by following their own strategies and what they believe to work.

Third, it was extremely apparent that most people don’t know how in the world Google really works. I found it very interesting during the round table discussion to move from table to table only to hear completely different strategies and techniques. Since Google keeps their search engine data proprietary, its all we can do to guess and test to find things that we believe works. This means that SEO is much like the King James Bible. Many people interpret it differently and not everyone is on the same page. Google is brilliant for creating something that is so powerful, yet so un-understandable all at the same time.

What I Took Away From The Conference

As much as every touted social networking strategies, it was very apparent that content is still the king. The content that you have on your pages, as well as the content that you are using for backlinks, must be 100% unique and original in order to make a difference. The entire time at the conference I heard stories of how websites tanked traffic wise when the Google “Panda” update hit. As we all know, this update was geared towards killing sites that used horrible and copied content. Having original and unique content is extremely important. If you can’t write, don’t get discouraged as you can run over to our content writing site and order content in bulk.

Optimizing your page with headers, such as h1 and h2, is extremely important as Google places a large emphasis on indexing these. The best thing to do is to simply think to yourself, “How do I make it as easy as possible for a reader to find the information they are looking for?” The answer is by putting keywords, or the main topic in headers to help people easily find out your information as you scroll down the page.

Having a marketing strategy is key. If you are just rolling with the motions, but don’t have a solid plan in place, it will be hard to see success. What I mean by this is where do you want your site to go? How do you want it to grow? What demographic do you want to capture? Having all of this laid out from the beginning is the best way to get the best results as you work hard day in and day out.

The last thing that I got out of the conference is how things are constantly changing for the better. There are websites, social media outlets, and more which make it easier than ever to get results. One site I heard a lot about at the conference was something called slideshare.net. From what I was told, you can upload a power point presentation, but Google can actually index the verbiage on these presentations through the site. This site can be a great resource for links, content indexing, and more. PDF indexing is also something that is gaining traction.

While there will always be new things, it is important to do the best job that you can by staying up with all of the new things going on so that you can take advantage of them. Content is still the king, its just the way that we can present it is what will change. If you have ever wondered if the SEO market is something that is dying off, this conference made it clearer than ever that this industry is thriving and growing extremely quickly. Now is the right time to get into internet marketing as everyone is logging on before they do anything these days.

As you can see, I had a great time at the conference. Your success in SEO is determined by your work ethic and how much actual work you put into it. If you work hard, great things will eventually happen, so keep up the good work and hopefully this small editorial peice will keep you motivated.

For anyone that has a smart phone, you know that going a day without it can be tough. Can you imagine not checking Facebook, your e-mail, or the latest news story in the palm of your hand? While this may sound a bit silly, there are many people who have not made the jump to mainstream technology. What we mean by this is that for many Americans, the lack of access to the internet limits their ability to get jobs, services, education, or even public safety resources. Without internet access, people really are figuratively left out in the dark. The biggest reason is that many people just don’t have a computer, or just don’t know how to use one properly. Mobile phones are offering an alternative to mainstream computer use as their dumbed down operating systems make it easy for even the most computer illiterate people to connect to the internet.

Of course there are many things that a mobile phone can’t do that a computer can, but the fact remains that mobile phones are closing the gap between the non-savvy, and the savvy internet user. Advertisers are ecstatic about this change as this means that advertisements are being seen by more people than ever before thanks to mobile devices. While mobile phones are closing the gap, the biggest thing that continues to keep the gap alive is that of expensive mobile plans. Many people just don’t have the cash to pay for a high-end smartphone and the data plan that is required. If advertisers truly wanted to make a bigger dent, going the Kindle Fire route would be a good idea. What are we talking about?

Amazon recently released the Kindle fire, but the math shows that they take a bath on each sale as they cost more to make then what they are selling them for. The catch is that Amazon is hoping to make the money due to book purchases on their online market. The same could work for mobile phones. The cheaper they are to own, the more that advertisers will make as more people will get exposure to advertisements. If cell phone makers, carriers, and advertisers worked together, they could really benefit more if they made it even more accessible for people to have an iphone or Android smart phone. Time will tell, but it is clear that mobile phones are helping to make this wold a more technologically savvy place to live.

If you love video games, you have probably noticed that in-game advertising is something that has really caught on over the years. Companies love to splash their logo’s and ads on billboards in a virtual world, but some games and sponsors have totally over done it. While there is a place for advertisements in video games, the truth is that it can be done tactfully, and not forcefully.

With games becoming ever more connected to the internet, the reality of ads that change to the most current advertising of a sponsors marketing campaign is already happening, and will continue to evolve. For example, there is talk of a bid system going on for some of the top video games that will be coming out in the next year. Traditionally, the top bidder gets their logos put into the game permanently, but this does nothing to help the small bidders as they don’t have the money to compete. In order to make it more fair, video game developers are considering using an ad system similar to that of Google Adsense.

This means that on any given day, the advertiser paying the most money for an ad will get their logo shown on the virtual maps of gamers, but those that have less money to spend on ads will also get their ads shone, it just might not be in prevalent places on the map. While this type of ad campaign is in the works for games, it definitely works outside of your PS3 or Xbox 360. If this idea truly gains traction, it will give advertisers a whole new medium to push their products and services, while a player is immured in a virtual world killing zombies, or fellow players online.

Back in June of 2011, Google launched the +1 button. This button is now viewable on more than a million sites, and gets viewed over 4 billion times a day. Are you using the Google +1 button on your sites? If not, you better start as Google is now factoring in how many +1 button presses a page has.
Most of us our familiar with the Facebook “like” button, and this is pretty much the same idea, just in Google form. Search engines already take into account how many facebook likes a page has, and therefor moves it up or down int he rankings accordingly. It is becoming much more apparent that social media is going to be playing a huge part in the world of internet marketing and SEO. We have put out a few SEO tutorial videos within the last few months that show you how to easily add the Facebook “like” and Google +1 buttons to your site using a simple WordPress plugin. If you haven’t seen the videos, make sure to view them here.

In January, Google started pushing out its Google TV set top box at CES in Las Vegas. While this device definitely has some neat features, it lacks some essential WOW factor, which is content. For those of you who are not familiar with the Google TV setup, it is a box that essentially connects your TV to the internet. This allows you to watch streaming video, search the web, and of course see advertisements. This week, Google held a meeting with executives of the big media companies that rule the airwaves. There are a lot of jitters out there about the huge company of Google entering the world of broadcasting, but here are a few of the good reasons that I believe would make it beneficial to have Google enter the fray.

First, for all of us internet marketers, giving people a way to find our sites in order to click our ads is a great thing. Think about how much time you spend watching TV each day. It’s probably more time than you would like to admit, but the truth is that people love TV, so making it a source to get online is a no brainer from an internet marketing perspective.

I love streaming media, and wish we had more of it. Google entering the broadcasting world would ensure that more programming and channels would be able to be streamed than ever before. I hate my expensive cable bill as there are only a few shows that I like to watch anyway. By having the ability to stream what I want, I will be able to save money as I will only pay for what I want.

Google can bring a a la cart option to TV which has never existed before. You will be able to watch what you want, and not have to worry about paying for something that you really don’t care about.

As you can see, there are several reasons why Google entering the broadcasting world could be a good thing.

<g:plusone size="small" count="1" href="http://learnseoconcepts.com/?p=858"></g:plusone>
